Description
17th-century French school. Portrait of Odet de Matignon, Count of Thorigny (1559–1595). Oil on canvas: H: 60 cm – W: 47 cm (historical restorations)
The eldest son of Jacques II de Matignon and Françoise de Daillon du
Lude, Odet de Matignon held the title of Count of Thorigny and
served as Marshal of the King’s Camps and Armies,
Lieutenant-General of the Government of Normandy, Governor of
Cherbourg and bailiff of Évreux. Appointed a gentleman of the King’s
chamber in 1582, he distinguished himself during the Affair of the Gautiers in 1588,
then at the Battle of Arques in 1589, at the Battle of Ivry and during the sieges
of Rouen, Alençon, Lisieux and Laon. He also commanded during the
siege of Dijon, whilst Henry IV confronted and defeated his enemies at
Fontenay-Françoise. In recognition of his services, he was made a knight
of the King’s Orders in 1595. He died childless that same year.
