Description
Very large Japanese (Arita) porcelain dish with peacock decoration, c. 1700. A very large circular porcelain dish with a widely flared rim, decorated in the Imari style using underglaze blue, iron red, polychrome glazes and gold. In the centre, within a large circular medallion, two peacocks are depicted amongst rocks and a plum tree. The rim features a rich, compartmentalised decoration, organised into large panels alternately filled with floral compositions and birds perched on the branches of flowering trees. These scenes are separated by bold ornamental motifs in blue, iron red, black and gold: broad, sinuous arabesques, stylised fans and half-chrysanthemum blossoms, enriched with peonies and foliage. Diameter: 50 cm (Very good condition, slight wear to the black enamels).
A dish with the same border but featuring a falcon in the
central medallion is held at the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta, inv.
3871.
