Description
Attributed to Jens JUEL (1745–1802), Danish School. Portrait of Louise Augusta of Holstein, wife of Frederick Christian II of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. Oil on oval canvas. 71 x 52 cm (antique moulded and gilded wooden frame)
Louise Augusta of Denmark and Norway (1771–1843) was
officially the daughter of King Christian VII and Queen Caroline-
Mathilde. However, it is widely accepted that her natural father was Yoann
Friedrich Struensee. The latter, the King’s physician, became the Queen’s
lover and is probably the princess’s biological father. Following
Struensee’s execution and her mother’s banishment, Louise Augusta
was brought up at the Danish court, at Christiansborg Palace. She
went on to marry Frederick Christian II of Schleswig-Holstein.
