Description
A drop-front secretary desk in rosewood, amaranth and precious wood veneers, richly decorated with marquetry depicting bouquets of flowers, birds and fruit, a Greek fret frieze and a large central medallion adorned with a basket of produce. It opens to reveal a drawer at waist height, a hinged top revealing three compartments and six drawers, and two doors at the base. The side panels are bevelled, the legs are tall and straight with splayed bases, and the waist is straight. Extensive gilded bronze ornamentation, including a frieze of posts, drooping motifs, rosettes, mouldings, a apron with a foliage-adorned mascaron depicting a bearded man, and clogs with clawed acanthus leaves. Top in Italian cherry-red marble. Louis XVI style, bearing a Roussel mark. H. 144 cm – W. 114 cm – D. 148 cm
Notes: Our secretary’s desk is reminiscent of the one from the former Paul-
Louis Weiller collection (Gos/Delettrez auction, Paris, 5 April 2011, lot 104) bearing
the mark of Léonard Boudin, who was admitted as a master in 1761.
The bronze on the top of this piece is the same as that on the
English-style chest of drawers by Pierre Garnier, who was admitted as a master in 1742,
now in the Nissim de Camondo Museum.
