Description
A richly chiselled and gilded bronze and porcelain mantelpiece set in the Sèvres style, with a royal blue background enhanced with gold and enamels, comprising a clock and a matching pair of candelabra. The clock’s circular porcelain dial is painted with two cherubs in the clouds holding a garland of flowers, signed ‘F. BARBEDIENNE / A PARIS’, surrounded by an hour ring with white cabochons and Roman numerals on a blue background. It is supported by a drapery tied with fringes and tassels and flanked by four fluted and serrated columns with foliage capitals. The architecturally shaped case, with its stepped design, is adorned on its upper surface with two rectangular porcelain plaques decorated with floral scrolls; it is crowned by a lidded porcelain vase depicting a scene of ‘The Toilette of Venus’ on one side and a lakeside landscape on theother, flanked by gilded bronze handles decorated with winged mermaids. The five-armed candelabra rest on a quadrangular shaft flanked by ram’s heads and drapery, adorned with painted female allegories outlined in pearlescent enamel. The ensemble, crowned by an antique female mascaron, supports a cluster of four light arms in acanthus scrolls. Signed and numbered movement: ‘CH. BOYE’ ‘2452’ Clock: H. 55 cm – W. 29 cm – D. 20 cm Candelabra: H. 56 cm – W. 16 cm – D. 17 cm (signs of wear and missing parts)
