Compare with an oil on canvas depicting the same young woman,
offered for auction at Sotheby’s New York on 27 January 2012 (lot
473) as an original work by Colson.
J-F Colson’s obituary states that he also painted
pastels with great ease and that Latour is said to have asked him to
devote himself exclusively to this medium (Neil Jeffares).
A singer at the Paris Opera, Mademoiselle Laguerre left behind the amusing
memory of having performed *Iphigénie en Tauride*, drunk after having had too much
champagne, which prompted Sophie Arnould to reply to an
aristocrat who asked her whether the opera being performed was *Iphigénie en
Aulis or in Tauris, ‘No, it’s Iphigenia in Champagne’!
