Description
A moulded mahogany armchair with a square, cane-backed seat; the armrests and their ornate uprights rest on a straight apron with jointing blocks decorated with medallions. Tapered legs with gilded bronze feet. The seat is upholstered in old gold velvet. Louis XVI period, stamped by Louis Moreau (1740–1802, master cabinetmaker in 1764). H. 90 m – W. 57 cm – D. 48 cm (signs of wear, damage and missing parts) Provenance: The residence of Mr and Mrs J.P., Avenue Montaigne. This armchair is inspired by the series that the Marquis de Marigny commissioned from the cabinetmaker Pierre Garnier for the dining room of his private mansion on the Place des Victoires in the 1780s. It reflects the Anglomania of the period and the fashion for chairs in solid mahogany with clean lines.
