Description
A pair of centrepieces known as ‘Apollo’s tripods’, made from Sèvres biscuit porcelain with gilded highlights. One bears the monogram of Charles X, crowned in blue stencil and dated 1830. Each tripod is inspired by the forms of ancient braziers; the fluted bowl, decorated with friezes of pearls, rays of hearts and facing griffins, rests on a central foliated shaft entwined by a serpent and three legs topped with eagles with outstretched wings and bucrania masks, a frieze of floral arabesques, and rests on clawed feet. Triangular base with recessed edges and a foliage frieze on a gilded bronze plinth. H. 39.5 cm – Diam. 23 cm (significant damage, losses and general restoration; sold as is)
