Description
A chiselled and gilded bronze clock depicting an allegory of motherhood. The basket rests on a pedestal, under the watchful eye of the mother on one side and a smoking Athenian woman on the other. The enamelled dial, signed ‘Grégoire à Paris’, is bordered by a frieze of heart-shaped rays and two tritons blowing trumpets. The base is adorned with friezes of ex-voto hearts and a central trophy set amongst ivy and laurel foliage. Rests on small tapered feet. Empire period. H. 36.5 cm – W. 33 cm – D. 11.5 cm (mechanism missing; signs of wear; damage and losses)
