This pair of vases is characteristic of the Austrian style of the
second half of the 19th century. These pieces are strongly influenced
by the Renaissance and the taste for cabinets of curiosities or chambers
of wonders in vogue during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were showcased
at international exhibitions where Viennese artists vied with
those of the past. Several workshops sprang up, such as, in the
1870, such as those of Hermann Böhm, Ludwig Pollitzer and Simon Grünwald.
Hermann Böhm went into partnership with Pollitzer before founding his own workshop. Active
from 1866 to 1922, he marked his pieces with his monogram ‘HB’.
He was renowned for his enamel paintings, particularly his
mythological scenes. Hermann Böhm’s masterpieces were exhibited
at the 1873 World’s Fair (Welt-Ausstellung) in Vienna and
exported to Paris, Switzerland, Italy and the United States.
