Description
François MORELLET (1926–2016) 2 mesh patterns –3° +3° Painted metal mesh and acrylic on panel, signed and inscribed ‘Bons baisers / François (Morellet)’ on the reverse. Created in 1971. 40 x 40 cm. Provenance: The artist’s family, then by direct descent The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Danielle Morellet The work is registered in the Morellet archives under No. 71154 The work presented here forms part of the ‘Trames’ series, which has been a recurring feature of François Morellet’s work since 1958. His work is based on an objective geometric approach aimed at distancing itself from emotional subjectivity. In two grid patterns – 3° and +3° – he superimposes networks of steel grids to create optical interference and kinetic vibrations as the viewer moves. This mesh, however complex it may be, allows the work to be viewed from any position and thus aims to democratise the viewer’s approach to the artwork. The work we are presenting here is a fine example of the research carried out by the artist to combine both a highly controlled approach to creation and an enriched experience for the viewer. In 1961, François Morellet founded the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) alongside five other kinetic artists. For eight years, they pursued both research and protest. The aim of their approach was to highlight the role of the viewer and to erase the figure of the artist. In 1963, they created a labyrinth in which museum rules did not apply. The viewer is invited to engage physically with the artwork. This maze was recreated in 2010 at the Museum of Art and History in Cholet, François Morellet’s hometown, where he spent his entire life.
