The Treaties of Nijmegen (1678–1679) brought to an end the Dutch War, which had begun in 1672 and was waged by Louis XIV against the United Provinces, joined by Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. This peace marked the zenith of the king’s reign, and he came to be known as Louis the Great. The Court and the royal propaganda apparatus immediately capitalised on the event to construct the image of a king who was as much a peacemaker as he was a conqueror. There are numerous examples of this, such as the painting *Louis XIV Resting in the Bosom of Glory after the Peace of Nijmegen* by Antoine COYPEL, held at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. Our painting is part of this trend towards the deification of the monarch.
