Born in Saint-Broladre into a family of sailors based in Cancale, Étienne Blandin was a qualified art teacher who witnessed the final decades of sailing fishing; living in Saint-Malo, he meticulously documented the rigging, life on board and the activity in the ports along the north coast of Brittany. He was appointed Painter to the Navy on 30 March 1934.
