René LALIQUE (1860–1945).
A round brooch depicting a white glass snake, moulded and pressed onto a pink mirror-finished tin base. Gilded metal setting, signed ‘Lalique’ on the reverse.
Diameter: 4.5 cm
René Lalique was a French jeweller and master glassmaker, a leading figure of the French Art Nouveau movement, whose iconography he embraced. He pioneered the use of volume in jewellery and the incorporation of new materials, including glass. The serpent brooch was created in 1911.
This brooch appeared in the 1928 catalogue but was discontinued after 1932. It is illustrated in Félix Marcilhac’s *Catalogue Raisonné René Lalique*, on page 544.
