Voluntary lot
Description
Attributed to Philippe MATORZEC, Lord of CREHELAN, known as PHILIPPE (1726–1801).
The Revelation of Saint Paul.
Oil on canvas, double-curved at the top, signed ‘Philippe pxit 1768’ in the lower right-hand corner and stamped with a combined coat of arms in the lower left-hand corner (restored).
Height: 134 cm – Width: 90 cm
The shape of the canvas suggests that this painting was hung above an altar. The signature ‘Philippe’ may be linked to the Breton painter from Saint-Quay-Portrieux, where a painting of the Education of the Virgin, dated 1777, can be seen in the Chapel of Saint Anne. Other works can be seen, such as this Saint Barbara protecting the Church of Notre-Dame de Vitré from lightning, dated 1769.
Lot from a voluntary sale.
