Description
Simon BEAUVAIS (active in France between 1775 and 1781). Portrait of a woman holding a letter, with medallions depicting officers on her wrists. Original canvas, on the stretcher; an inscription on the reverse reads “?ais Px/1781” Height: 81 cm – Width: 64 cm We would like to thank the Conservatoire du Portrait du dix-huitième for its assistance in describing this painting. The letter held by the sitter and the bracelets adorned with miniature portraits are characteristic of the ‘Sensibility’ style of painting that was in vogue on both sides of the Channel towards the end of the 18th century. Simon Beauvais, an English painter and miniaturist based in London, depicts here a moment of social intimacy. Lot from a voluntary sale.
