A significant commemorative flag comprising three tricolour silk stripes, inscribed on one side on the white stripe with ‘VIVE L’EMPEREUR’ above a wreath of laurel leaves, and on the other side “CASSINI’S AROUND-THE-WORLD EXPEDITION IN THE YEARS 1859, 60, 61, 62, 63”, with two uncrowned naval anchors painted on the red stripe. The entire flag is edged with gold-coloured trimmings (most of which have come away from the lower part of the flag). Dimensions: 180 x 168 cm (with sleeve). A.B.E. Period: Second Empire – Third Republic. The inscriptions were transferred from an older flag to this one during the Third Republic. History: The Cassini was a paddle-wheel aviso of the French Navy, commissioned and recommissioned in May 1859 after having been decommissioned in 1858. In particular, it undertook a mission to New Caledonia from 1859 to 1863 before being converted into a pontoon. An anchor-laying vessel bearing the same name was sunk in 1917 by the Germans off the coast of Bonifacio.
