Description
A Model 1822 line cavalry officer’s sabre presented to the valedictorian of the Imperial Special School of Saint-Cyr, Sergeant Cadet Calixte Charles du Vallon (1835–1864), who died for France whilst on counter-guerrilla operations during the Mexican campaign (1864). Horn hilt (watermark missing), chiselled and gilded brass mountings, four-pronged guard decorated with laurel leaves and hallmarked ‘Manceaux à Paris’. Curved blade with a flat back, hollow sides and a fuller, engraved with two cartouches featuring foliage motifs and, in Gothic script, the inscription: “Certificate of satisfaction from the Major-General, Commander of the Imperial Special Military School – presented to Mr. du Vallon, sergeant cadet, top of the class of 1856”. Length: 114 cm. ABE, SF. Second Empire period. Calixte Charles de Jacobi du Vallon (1835–1864), top of his class at Saint-Cyr, served as a lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment of African Chasseurs. He served as a captain in Mexico, notably in counter-guerrilla operations. He was already an Officer of the Legion of Honour when he was seriously wounded at the Battle of San Antonio on 18 April 1864. He died of his wounds during the journey back to Europe. Buried at sea.
