Description
Garde du Corps du Roi, Garde Royale première restauration 1814, rare rifle in the model of the first type. Round barrel with calibre 17,1 mm, thunder with sides marked P of the inspector Pache (Charleville 1814/1815). No date on left side. On disassembly, the lock and barrel are marked VIII with a third point file. Flintlock lock with oxidised brass drum, marked in capital letters: Manufacture Royale de Charleville (the only manufacture to have produced the first model). Marked M under star. Unmarked brass fittings. Brass buttplate with traces of handling. On the top, the return is decorated with a half lily flower, carefully inlaid and adjusted. Smooth of any engraving. Brass counterplate.
The front of the trigger guard is decorated with a smooth half lily flower. T-shaped ramrod. High quality light walnut shaft. With handling shocks, a few stains with no wormholes. Overall length 142.5 cm, barrel length 102.7 cm. Stock with no cheek rest recess, marked on the right side with the maker's stamp "MC" surmounted by a P. Perfectly functional lock, straight and clean cocking and half cocking. Oxidation flower cleaned, without perforating corrosion.
However : The damascened decoration and gilding on the top of the barrel are cleaned (neither arms of France, nor text are legible). The engraving and chasing on the screws have been smoothed. The half lily flower motifs on the butt plate return and on the front of the trigger guard have had their relief engravings removed (Nb: these are not the simplified fleurons of the second model which, moreover, would be fitted with a "simple" round return butt plate).
Prestigious rifle in excellent condition.
NB: Rifle as described by Jean Baudriot. Page 178 and following of Volume 2 of his reference work "Les armes à feu Françaises - Modèles Réglementaires, 1717 - 1836".
