A student of David d'Angers at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Hippolyte Maindron exhibited at the Salon from 1834 to 1880. In 1839, he enjoyed great success there for a figure of Velléda contemplating the home of Eudore, for which he drew inspiration from Book IX of Châteaubriand's Martyrs published in 1809. He also worked on numerous restoration projects for public monuments, including the Louvre, the Pont-Neuf, Fontainebleau Palace and Sens Cathedral.
