Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) La Rieuse napolitaine n°1 Model created in 1863 Bronze bust with brown patina Signed "Carpeaux" and stamped "PROPRIETE CARPEAUX" with imperial eagle on left shoulder H. 52 cm Some wear to the patina This is a portrait of Anna Foucart, the eldest daughter of Jean-Baptiste Foucart, a close friend of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The sculptor painted the portrait of the young girl in 1860 and reused the model several times, adapting it for Rieuse napolitaine in 1863 and Rieuse aux roses in 1872. Here, the emphasis is on traditional Neapolitan costume, as a counterpart to the bust of Le Rieur napolitain, which was one of the sculptor's greatest successes at the time.
