The model for The Vignette Fisherwoman was born of the artist's encounter with a young fisherwoman. Carpeaux was very ill and staying at Puys (near Dieppe), where his friend Alexandre Dumas had provided him with a studio. In a letter to Bruno Chérier, he recounted his meeting with the young girl, whom he then invited to pose for him: "... I saw from the top of the carriage an admirable leg emerge from under the rags that only went down to the knees...". This was the last model he made for the publishing house before his death the following year. It was used by his workshop from 1874.
