Wolff Robert (1916–1995), known as Robys – *Bitter Secrestat*. 1935. Marboeuf Printers, Paris. 128.5 x 198 cm. Original poster, lithographic print. Mounted on canvas. Condition B: two restored tears, one on the left-hand side, the other in the text ‘apéritif’. This poster, which has been popular in bars for several decades thanks to its oblong format, tells the story of a liqueur that began in Montignac in the Dordogne, with the birth of its creator, Pierre-Jules-Honoré Secrestat. He first trained at Requier in Périgueux, which produced the liqueur ‘La Gauloise’. He then moved to Rue Notre-Dame in Bordeaux, Gironde, where he created the gentian-based liqueur Bitter Secrestat. Having achieved success, he then had a distillery built, which can still be seen in the Cour du Médoc in Bordeaux. It was not until 1875 that Secrestat returned to the Dordogne, when he purchased the Château de Larimaldie (Saint-Pierre de Chignac). He had cellars built, which can still be visited today. As for our poster, it remains by far the most iconic image of this liqueur—served in the same way as absinthe—and bears witness to the profusion of spirits and liqueurs that were created in the early 20th century.
