Description
Charles Loupot (1892–1962) – The Cinema. 1927. Oil on heavy paper. Signed and dated in ink in the bottom right-hand corner. 43.5 x 57.5 cm. A crease mark in the lower right-hand corner. This work depicts a subject rarely portrayed in the history of art. Executed in a Cubist style with Art Deco aesthetics, this work is, according to family tradition, a design for a poster intended for the Pathé studios. This claim is supported by the presence of a pencil sketch of lettering reading ‘Pathé’ on the right-hand side. It is worth noting that the composition of the subject is strikingly similar to Marcellin Auzolle’s poster for *Le Cinématographe*, even though that was produced several decades earlier. Provenance: Purchased from a descendant of a Parisian printer, then held in a French collection.
