Michel Polnareff and Tony Franck (1945–) – Polnarévolution at the Olympia. 1972. Printed by St Martin, Paris. 115.5 x 78 cm / 45 x 30.8 in. Original poster, offset print, unmounted. Condition A-, two original horizontal creases. Based on a photograph by Tony Frank, this erotic advertising campaign was deliberately chosen by Polnareff. Often criticised and mocked for his androgynous style, he had fun in this poster by taking feminine codes and turning them against his detractors. A true ode to the freedom of his body, his sexuality, his gender and his art, this single image perfectly encapsulates what the artist sought to embody in his ‘Revolution’. Moreover, the show itself was innovative, featuring futuristic costumes designed by Paco Rabanne. An immediate scandal, a court case, a conviction – within a few weeks, the poster had become an event in its own right. The forerunner of the ‘buzz’ – indeed, perhaps even the very first of its kind.
