Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923) – Académie de musique. Le rêve. 1890. Printed by Gillot. 87 × 63 cm. Original poster, lithographed and gillotaged. Not mounted on board. Condition A – small stains at the very edge of the right and top margins.
This splendid ballet poster embodies all the stylistic elements of Japonism, which was in vogue at the time. The printing technique is remarkable in that it is unusual for prints.
Created by Charles Gillot, which is why his name appears prominently in the composition, alongside the artist’s name. This poster, which was marketed by Sagot, was an immediate success.
Contrary to what the title might suggest, this was in fact a production by the Paris Opera at the Palais Garnier. The ballet was set to music by Léon Gastinel, with a libretto by Edouard Blau and choreography by Joseph Hansen. The plot is set in Takeno, Japan, but the poster reveals how that country was perceived during the Belle Époque.
