A collection of four letters from a LIEUTENANT COMMANDER of the IMPERIAL GENDARMERIE in the 2nd CORPS, addressed to his family, dated: -Vittorin, 10 August 1809: “Having been entrusted by the Marshal, Duke of DALMATIA, the Emperor’s Lieutenant in Spain, with an important mission, the outcome of which is to be brought to His Majesty’s attention, I departed from Toro, His Excellency’s headquarters, on 9 July last…I MADE MY WAY TO Pamplona, the capital of Spanish Navarre; from there I shall spend a few days in Bayonne and then return to the headquarters of His Excellency the Marshal, the Duke of Dalmatia....I have not yet received the Legion of Honour, which the Duke of Dalmatia requested for me from the Emperor following the capture of La Coruña....My health has suffered greatly as a result of the campaigns in Spain and Portugal which we have just undertaken.... The King himself has just fought three battles against the combined forces of the English, Portuguese and Spanish insurgents. He has been victorious on every occasion. Thirty thousand English and sixty thousand Spaniards and Portuguese had advanced to within 7 leagues of Madrid.
