PONTIFICAL ZOUAVE Captain’s UNIFORM, comprising: - his rare TALPACK, made of cardboard and covered with an astrakhan band (attached). Scarlet cloth cap. Insignia bearing the Papal Arms in gilded brass (two crossed keys surmounted by a mitre (7 x 9 cm)). Silver-plated metal cockade. Three lion’s heads stamped in gilded brass with hooks and remnants of cord. Leather lining. -BOLERO in sky-blue cloth trimmed with black wool braid and scalloped edges. Facings in the same colour as the uniform cloth, edged with black braid surmounted by three gold-plated silver braids. The back of the sleeve fastens with 12 buttonholes fitted with small gilded brass bell buttons (diameter 0.8 cm). Back richly decorated with black wool braids. Inner lining in scarlet canvas. With a MENTANA CROSS, miniature model, originally sewn on. -WAISTCOAT in sky-blue cloth, trimmed with black wool braid. The front is fastened with 27 brass bell-shaped buttons (diameter 0.8 cm). The back is made of fine black canvas, fully lined with light beige canvas. With a cross on the chest. -HOODED COAT in sky-blue cloth, piped with black wool. The front fastens straight down the centre with four buttonholes on each side, fastened with half-bell-shaped brass buttons stamped with the papal coat of arms (diameter 2.3 cm). Fully lined with scarlet cloth. The hood fastens at the base with a flap of sky-blue cloth edged with black piping, fastened with two small-sized uniform buttons (diameter 1.7 cm). -HOSIERED TROUSERS in sky-blue cloth piped with a black wool cord. Inner waistband in sky-blue cloth. Pewter fly buttons. -BELT in scarlet cloth -Belt of an Officer of the CHASSEURS à PIED, in black leather with a double-layered belt plate in cast brass in the shape of a hunting horn. -BOOTS in black leather. Enclosed is a bronze 4-soldi coin (found in one of the pockets) bearing the inscription ‘PIUS IX PONT.MAX. ANN.XXI 1867’. Numerous moth holes. Oxidation of the braids and trimmings. France.
