Description
An unusual STAFF OFFICER’S SABRE, with silver-plated brass hilt, a lion’s head pommel, flanges decorated with swords surrounded by laurel leaves, an ebony tang, chequered, a curved blade, 86 cm long, with double hollow-ground edges engraved one-third of the way along, traces of bluing and gilding (oxidation), ending in a carp’s tongue. Steel scabbard bearing on each side a sturdy hook of the An XII naval officer/drum major type; both cuffs chiselled with two laurel wreaths intertwined on one side and fleurons on the other. The tip of the scabbard ends in a lyre-shaped barbed point. First Empire period.
