Description
COPE 2 (born in 1968) "Iconic bubble red", 2023 Spray paint on canvas, signed lower right. H_80 cm - W_135 cm Cope2, whose real name is Fernando Carlo, is an American graffiti artist born on 14 June 1968 in New York. He is renowned for his significant contribution to the graffiti scene, particularly in the Bronx, where he grew up. Fernando Carlo began expressing his artistic talent on the streets of New York as a teenager, quickly becoming one of the city’s most respected and influential graffiti artists. His pseudonym, Cope2, has become synonymous with a bold style, dynamic lettering and a striking presence on the urban landscape. Cope2 emerged in the 1980s, a pivotal era for the graffiti movement in New York. At that time, graffiti was often associated with hip-hop culture and served as a form of artistic expression used by young people to assert their identity within a challenging urban environment. Over the years, Cope2 has broadened his artistic scope by collaborating with other graffiti artists, as well as working on more conventional projects, such as canvases and exhibitions in art galleries. This transition has allowed his raw talent to flourish within a broader context, bringing him recognition beyond the underground graffiti scene. Cope2 has exhibited his work in galleries around the world, thereby helping to legitimise graffiti as a respected art form. His works, often characterised by vibrant colours, dynamic forms and references to urban culture, reflect his passion for creative expression and his deep attachment to his roots in the Bronx. Cope2’s art continues to influence the graffiti scene and remains an integral part of New York’s rich artistic heritage. His journey, from rebellious artistic expression on the city’s streets to international recognition, testifies to art’s ability to transcend its humble origins and become a positive force in the world of contemporary creative expression.
