Deeply affected by the suicide of his friend Carlos Casagemas, the artist explored themes imbued with melancholy and solitude. Blue tones dominate his works and reinforce their emotional impact. Picasso was interested in fragile and marginalised figures, whom he depicted with great humanity. The theme of the nude also features prominently in his work. Far removed from the idealised representations of the academic tradition, his nudes prioritise the expression and truth of the body. The reclining nude evokes intimacy, vulnerability and contemplation.
