Four paintings by Haitian artists in a naïve style
Haitian naïve painters are often self-taught artists from humble backgrounds, who paint without concern for perspective or naturalism. Their paintings depict everyday life and an idealised natural world, inspired by Voodoo and Catholic beliefs. Gaining recognition thanks to the school founded in 1944 in Port-au-Prince by Peters Dewitt, and supported by Breton and Malraux, this art form now appeals to collectors of African art.
Gesner Abelard (E. Abelard, 1922–2005) — A painter and sculptor born in Port-au-Prince, he studied at the Centre d’Art d’Haïti in 1946, alongside Rigaud Benoit and Préfète Duffaut. Bronze medal at the Port-au-Prince Bicentenary Exhibition in 1949
Gesner Armand (1936–2008) — Born in La Croix-des-Bouquets, a leading figure in modern Haitian painting, a watercolourist and painter, but also a poet (‘L’autre bord’, 1980). He was director of the Haitian Art Museum at the Collège Saint-Pierre from 1984 to 1992.
