The demolition of a ruin: the Grand Châtelet?
ink and wash
13 x 17 cm
Modern label on the reverse: The Grand Châtelet in Paris, a medieval fortress built in the 12th century by Louis VI on the right bank of the Seine (now the Place du Châtelet), served as the seat of the Provost of Paris, a court and a grim prison with dungeons and torture chambers. During the French Revolution, its court was abolished in 1790, and it was the scene of the September 1792 massacres (216 prisoners killed). Its demolition, decided as early as 1792, began in 1802 under Napoleon and was completed around 1810, with the site replaced by the present-day square.
