Godfrey KNELLER (1646-1723), entourage of Portrait of a Woman with a Pearl Necklace and her Servant Oil on canvas Blackened wood frame 140 x 104 cm Frame 154 x 117 cm (restorations) Godfrey Kneller or Gottfried Kneller was an English and British portrait painter. He ran a successful studio in London producing replicas and copies. After being introduced to the Duke of Monmouth, he received commissions from King Charles II, was launched as a court artist and appointed first painter, a title he retained under his successors. Renowned as a portraitist in the grand manner, he painted portraits of the greatest figures of the age, including Newton, Charles II, Peter the Great and the Archduke Charles. In 1684, he came to France and painted the portrait of Louis XIV for Charles II.
