Description
Peter Paul RUBENS (Siegen 1577 - Antwerp 1640)
Christ on the Cross
Oak panel, three boards, thinned and glued to a parquet panel
Circa 1620-1625
105.5 x 73.5 cm
Detailed notes by Niels Büttner on request.
TECHNICAL NOTE: The support is a 17th-century oak panel consisting of three boards joined vertically, with the joints slightly to the left and right of the cross. The original plank was thinned and glued to a new support, approximately 5 mm thick, with parquet flooring. The preparation of the panel with a coat of white gesso corresponds to that usually used by Rubens and his workshop. A streaky silver-grey imprimatur has been applied to the background and, even in normal lighting conditions, it shows through in certain parts of the painting. Microscopic examination of the paint layers has revealed not only white, black and red pigments in the parts representing flesh, but also blue and green pigments (azurite and malachite), the use of which is typical in Rubens' depictions of human skin. The painting is in a generally good state of conservation.
A condition report is available, written by Isabelle Leegenhoek.
