Our painting is traditionally attributed to Mathieu le Nain (see a postcard found behind the painting). It should be compared with Portrait d'homme âgé de 23 ans et daté 1644 (Toile, 69 x 53 cm) presented for sale in 1954 (Paris, Galerie Charpentier, 7 December 1954 and published by Robert Lebel in 1956). Both have a rougher, harder touch, far from the gentleness we know from Mathieu le Nain.
