View of Malta taken in front of the fort of Manoël; Malta, view of the large port taken from Valletta
Pair of canvases
42.3 x 116.5 cm
Old restorations
The first painting shows Fort Manoël, an imposing fortification located on the island of Manoël, in the centre of Malta's Grand Harbour, opposite Valletta. The ramparts and angular bastions of the fortified capital overlooking the sea can be seen in the distance. The Palace of the Grand Masters can be seen in the centre of the city and the Saint-Philippe Tower, at the end of the jetty, marks the entrance to the port, where several boats are already moored. A similar composition exists in the Louvre.
The panoramic view in the second painting offers a perspective of the Grand Harbour of Malta from Valletta, looking out over the fortified towns of Vittoriosa and Senglea. In the foreground, numerous boats enliven the harbour, which is dominated by Fort Saint-Ange and framed by two stone buildings. There is also a similar composition in the Louvre, on deposit at the Musée national de la Marine.
