Our drawing is a preparatory sketch for the illustration of the corker's trade in the Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers by Diderot and d'Alembert (volume 23, plate 2). This work depicts the trade as follows: "The vignette or top of the Plate represents the shop of a corkmaker. Figs. 1 & 2. Workers busy making corks. 3. Merchant assorting corks."
