Our painting was once part of a two-panel altarpiece depicting scenes from the life of Mary, which originally comprised four panels. The four versos each depicted three standing saints (twelve in total). The panel at the top right has not yet been found; the other three panels were still complete at the Neumeister auction in November 1986, but were subsequently separated.
Our panel depicts the death of Mary on one side (formerly the inside) and three full-length saints on the other (formerly the outside): St Sylvester, St Jerome and St Martin.
