Infrared reflectography enables us to identify an underlying drawing which, despite the repaints, places the work in Cranach's workshop.
Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) was a German humanist, theologian and reformer who worked closely with Martin Luther. Nicknamed "the tutor of Germany", he played a key role in spreading the Protestant Reformation. As a professor at the University of Wittenberg, he helped to modernise teaching by emphasising ancient languages, philosophy and the study of biblical texts. The author of the Augsburg Confession in 1530, he also sought to promote dialogue and unity between the different religious currents of his time.
