Born in Cambrai, Vincent Malo was a Flemish Baroque painter who emigrated to Italy after training in Antwerp with Rubens and Teniers. Around 1634, he left for Genoa, where he frequented the circle of the brothers Cornelis and Lucas de Wael. A flourishing port city in the 1600s, Genoa benefited from the arrival of many foreign artists, as it had the advantage of being less competitive than Venice, Florence and Rome, while offering a wide range of sponsors from churches to collectors. Malo played an important role in Genoa in the transition from Caravaggio to Baroque. He then left for Rome, where he died at the age of 45.
