BIBLIOGRAPHY
K. Ertz, Pieter Brueghel der Jüngere, Lingen, 2000, pp.194-195, no. A44 (denied to Pieter Brueghel the Younger).
Our panel, a variation on a motif created by Pieter Brueghel the elder, has been attributed to his eldest son Pieter the younger (1564-1638) by comparison with the small tondo in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp (Ertz, op.cit, p.37, fig. 26, Kat. 33). However, the style of the figures, the bluish landscape and the way the trees and leaves are depicted in our painting are closer to the style of his younger brother, Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568- 1625).
The iconography and title of the work refer to Christ's parable: "Hear and understand. It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, that defiles a man. Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this, they were scandalized? But he said, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. They are blind leading the blind, and if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into the pit. "(Matthew, 15, 10-15)
