The artist produced several versions of this view with significant variations. In our composition, the bathers in the lower right are reminiscent of the bathers in Abraham Storck's composition formerly in the Anton C. R. Dreesmann collection (Christie's sale, Amsterdam, 16 April 2002, no. 1224, sold for €70,500).
The artist belonged to a family of Amsterdam painters. Abraham was greatly influenced by Ludolf Bakhuizen in his painting of the sky and sea. The boats are reminiscent of the art of van de Velde, father and son.
The "trekschuit" or water coach is a boat that provides a regular river transport service for people between Leiden and Amsterdam.
