A painter and poet, Lorenzo Lippi was a pupil of Matteo Rosselli. His work is marked by an elegant narrative style. After working in Florence, Lippi followed Claude Medici, widow of Leopold V of Austria-Tyrol, during her stay in Austria. He painted many portraits there. He devoted the last twenty years of his life to writing the poem "Malmantile Racquistato".
This scene must be identified as Moses and the Daughters of Jethro, because of several iconographic elements. The sheep in the foreground are a direct reference to the Exodus story, where Jethro's daughters come to draw water for their father's flock. Moses is in the background behind the well, scaring off the shepherds. (Bible, Book of Exodus, 2.16)
