17TH CENTURY Neapolitan school, circle of P. Finoglio, A scene from Jerusalem Delivered : Clorinda attacking the Crusaders (?), canvas
100 x 140 CM - 39,4 x 55,1 IN.
The subject is taken from the Tasse's Jerusalem Delivered (Canto XII). At the heart of the First Crusade, Clorinde, a proud Muslim warrior, dashes out of the ramparts on a night mission to set fire to the Crusaders' formidable siege tower. After accomplishing this feat, she tragically finds herself locked out of the city, condemned to face the knight Tancred in the dark, who, unaware of her identity beneath his armour, mortally wounds her at the end of a fierce duel.
