The artist saw himself at the height of his career when he was considered "the foremost painter in Europe" by Grimm. Director of the Royal School for Protected Pupils in 1749, he was made a Knight of Saint Michael in 1751 and appointed First Painter to the King in 1762. Another Self-Portrait dates from the same year (an oval canvas measuring 87 x 71 cm and kept at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg), which shows the artist in his old age. Along with François Boucher, Carle Van Loo was the leader of the 1700s generation of rococo painters who dominated France and Europe in the 18th century. Unlike Boucher, Van Loo did not fall into the excesses of the rococo movement, but instead opted for a certain classicism that appealed to many of the artists he mastered.
