Horse racing was one of the highlights of Rome's Carnival, celebrated each year before the start of Lent. The start was given in the Piazza del Popolo. Here, Vernet, no doubt inspired by studies by his friend Géricault, shows grooms trying to control the horses before the race starts.
The Metropolitan Museum in New York holds a sketch of this scene, which served as preparatory work for a composition commissioned by the French ambassador in Rome.
