Alexandre KUCHARSKI (Warsaw, 1741 - Paris, 1819)
Portrait of Marie-Antoinette at the Temple
Canvas 21.5 x 16.5 cm
Signed lower left Kucharsky
Numbered lower left 249
Provenance :
Possibly from the collection of the Count of Fersen;
Possibly from the collection of the Count of Hunolstein (according to a label on the reverse of the canvas).
After the fall of the monarchy in August 1792, Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, their children and Madame Lisabeth were imprisoned in the Temple, where the conditions of their detention became progressively more severe, particularly during the King's trial. Louis XVI was condemned to death and executed on 21 January 1793; the Queen, now in mourning, remained in the Temple until she was transferred to the Conciergerie on 2 August 1793, before being guillotined on 16 October.
ˇ Following the departure of lisabeth Vige Le Brun, Kucharski became the queen's main portraitist. He visited her at the Temple between January and April 1793, probably carrying out preparatory studies for several versions of the portrait, now known or lost.
Portrayed in mourning clothes, with great sobriety, Marie-Antoinette appears with dignity, standing out against a dark background that veils her captivation. This image, widely disseminated by Kucharski, enjoyed lasting success right up to the Restoration; our painting, one of the finest in the series, is one of these replicas, testifying to the moral cult surrounding the queen, who had become a martyr figure for the monarchy.
