Description
Emile GALLE (1846–1904): ‘Flowering branches of the Japanese apple tree’, based on the original design, with a variation in the carved and inlaid decoration, first created around 1903. A ‘Colonne’-style display cabinet in ribbed, moulded and carved walnut. The vertical body of the cabinet opens via a solid door in the lower section, surmounted by a large glazed door. The solid door, the lower side panels and the back of the display cabinet feature a decorative panel crafted from precious and native woods using marquetry. The upper side sections are glazed; the interior is fitted with clear glass shelves. The column-like uprights rest on a deeply moulded base supported by flattened spherical feet, also known as ‘miches’. The top is rounded and features a central step. Probably produced by the Gallé Workshops (1904–1936) during the Art Nouveau period. Signed ‘GALLE’ in marquetry on the right-hand side panel. H. 158 cm W. 38 cm D. 30 cm. Bibliography: Alastair Duncan and Georges de Bartha, *Gallé Furniture*, Antique Collectors’ Club, Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK, 2012. An identical piece is reproduced on page 295 (ill. 17); the 1903 variant appears in an archive photograph reproduced on the same page (ill. 18). Expert: Emmanuel Eyraud
