Cercle Volney, 20 June to 13 July 1952. “Situated at the foot of the hill in Montmartre, on the corner of Boulevard Rochechouart and Rue des Martyrs, the Cirque Médrano was frequented by many painters. Picasso, Rouault, Matisse and Van Dongen drew inspiration from it for many of their subjects, just as the previous generation—Degas, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec—had done when the circus was still called Fernando. Geronimo Médrano, who played the role of the famous clown Boum Boum! there, took over as director in 1897. Chabaud loved the circus and was a regular at the Médrano. ‘The circus is a ring in which something happens,’ he wrote. ‘And within that ring, a performance must unfold that adheres to the technique and aesthetics of the circus—which must not be confused, for example, with the technique of music hall, where the audience faces the stage— whereas the circus is a spectacle that one can walk round and view from every angle.” He left behind a collection of drawings, pastels and watercolours on this theme, as well as a few paintings, of which we know of no more than ten examples. ” Sources: Chabaud, Fauve and Expressionist 1900–1914, Maïthé Vallès-Bled, Musée Paul Valéry, Sète, 15 June – 28 October 2012.
